Your terrazzo floor can be especially exposed to wear and tear if it is laid in a place that is exposed to a lot of traffic, such as a hallway or your entrance – or the hotel lobby. In addition, cracks can also appear in the floor over time. But then it’s good that with a simple sanding, you can make the floor appear as if it were brand new. A freshly sanded terrazzo floor can give life and charm to, for example, your bathroom.

How do you sand your terrazzo floor?
Regardless of whether it is a new floor or a restoration, grinding and polishing your terrazzo floor are some of the most important tasks that determine the floor’s finish. With a surface sanding of terrazzo, you can easily bring out the beautiful play of colors in the stones. With the right sanding, you can remove some of the deep scratches and stubborn stains that have come over the years, such as limescale stains.
1. Prepare the terrazzo floor
Here, you must first of all ensure an even surface, where all coatings/adhesives are removed from the floor. Then clean the floor thoroughly – preferably with a neutral tile and stone cleaning solution.
Remember that you must not use cleaning agents with acid or vinegar when cleaning your terrazzo floors. This could risk discolouring the floor!
2. Sand the terrazzo floor
When sanding, the floor achieves the beautiful shine that is part of the charm of the terrazzo floor. Here you can sand the floor appropriately with an eccentric sander or floor sander – choose a disc with a medium-fine or very fine grain. You can also choose to use a diamond grinder to grind your concrete terrazzo floor.
Depending on how worn your terrazzo floor is, you may need to sand over several rounds so that all stains are removed.
If there are larger cracks or holes in the floor, you may need to consider patching them before you start polishing the floor. This can be done by, for example, using tinted epoxy that matches the color of the existing marble chips in your floor.
If you are not lucky enough to own an eccentric grinder yourself, there is luckily plenty of opportunity to borrow one. This can be done, for example, in your local hardware store, otherwise there are several places on the internet that offer tool rental in your local area. This way you don’t have to buy the tool yourself.
3. Finish by impregnating the terrazzo floor
It may be a good idea to polish the terrazzo floor after it has been sanded. To achieve the very best result, you must finish by giving the tiles impregnation or other surface treatment.
In this way, the floor is made even more resistant and can keep its attractive appearance for a longer time. Take a look at our large selection of stone treatment , which ensures that the tiles become more resistant to dirt and grime and are kept sparkling clean for a longer time.
